Australia’s Senate has been told that their policies against Fiji seem to be falling into a ‘hole’ as no positive results have been attained – five years on.
Queensland’s Liberal Senator Russell Trood says Australia has no clear vision for returning Fiji to democracy and risks being outmanoeuvred by the Fiji government.
“Our principles seem to have fallen into a huge hole here. We seem to be not moving forward. We don’t seem to have engaged any type of dialogue and we seem to put ourselves in a position from which we don’t seem to be able to escape. There is no clear mission to vision about where we going with Fiji.”
He adds – isolating Fiji is not the best way to get the country to move to democracy.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Secretary Dennis Richardson told the Senate - Australia has always had a clear direction when it comes to dealing with Fiji.
Richardson says Australia is always prepared to engage in constructive dialogue with the Fiji government.
