AAP -

The federal government has cut more than $100 million from the foreign affairs and trade budget.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is already financially strained and the federal opposition has declared the cuts "irresponsible and dangerous".

But the government's mid-year budget outlook said the cuts would save the government $105.2 million over four years.

"It will reduce costs in the foreign affairs and trade portfolio by: rationalising the provision of diplomatic services and scaling back accommodation plans at foreign posts..."

Queensland Liberal Russell Trood is not happy.

"Considering the financial constraints it is under, DFAT does its work with great professionalism," Senator Trood said in a statement.

"But its good work has been seriously impeded by a shortage of resources and a serious decline in overseas representation," he said.

The cuts come despite a fresh focus from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on foreign relations and his push for a new group, similar to ASEAN, for South-East Asia.
