Zonca says a boat carrying 48 asylum seekers and 4 crew was intercepted near waters in Darwin last night while the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee begins an inquiry into border security in the Torres Strait. Russell Trood, Liberal Senator, Qld says the area is Aust's 'frontline with the world' and there is a wide range of issues needing investigation including customs and immigration, public health, transport linkages and biosecurity. Trood says people move very freely across the border and the Torres Strait Treaty allows for a liberal regime. Trood says they have called for submissions. Trood says there is not a large number of asylum seekers but highlights the Burmese men in the esky earlier this year. Trood says the Senate Committee wants to be sure there is the security Australians expect.
