A review of Australia's military court has heard the system is facing a significant challenge of having the resources to hold trials by jury.

The Court Registrar, Colonel Geoff Cameron, says he is satisfied with the way the court has functioned since it opened in October last year.

But Colonel Cameron says it is currently working at maximum capacity and the workload is only going to increase.

"The administrative and financial burden in assembling military jurors at various trials locations throughout Australia and conceivably in overseas locations is very significant." he said.

"Additionally those officers and warrant officers appointed as military jurors are taken away from their regular duties."

Senator Russell Trood has told a Parliamentary committee a review into the court has heard concerns that jurors will not be properly protected from interference.

Senator Trood says he wants assurances that Defence is taking all the concerns raised seriously. "They are matters of critical importance to a jury system operating successfully I would have thought," Senator Trood said.

"I'm concerned to think that you might regard those as not sufficiently significant, not to receive urgent attention. Particularly since we're beginning jury trials next Monday."

Defence legal official, Group Captain Paul Cronan, says the issue of protection for jurors will be reviewed after four to six months.

"Not specifically directed at issues of jury tampering and the like but there are provisions in the legislation that can be used if necessary to pursue those types of complaints," he said.

"So there is a mechanism for it at the moment, not specific jury code as such and that is a matter that will be looked at, at the conclusion of this interim period." There are currently 17 matters which will proceed to trial by military judge and jury.
