Queensland Liberal Senator Russell Trood has called on state governments to follow the lead of New South Wales and compensate Indigenous Australians who had their wages stolen from them.

The New South Wales Government set up a repayment scheme to compensate Indigenous people who they withheld wages from in the 1960s and 1970s.

Senator Trood, who sat on a Senate inquiry on the stolen wages, says other states should set up similar funds.

"In some other jurisdictions such as Western Australia, there clearly is a case for a scheme to be introduced," he said.

One of the workers seeking repayment, Mary Farrel-Hooker, says in the 1970s, the New South Wales Government placed her $25 weekly wage in a trust fund she never accessed.

"All I received was $5 a week, which was probably pocket money, because I never saw the $25," she said.

She said she was relieved she would finally receive her wages.
