ABC Regional Radio - A Queensland Liberal Senator says the concept of another transcontinental road is gaining momentum, but there is a need for a significant injection of government funding.

Russell Trood has visited western Queensland for discussions on the Outback Way - a 2,800 kilometre route linking Winton in the state's central west to Laverton in Western Australia.

Senator Trood says sections still need to be upgraded to make it an all-weather route.

"There's a lot of money required frankly - I think there's a figure of $750 million to do various parts of it over a long period of time, there's no doubt that there's a lot of money involved in trying to upgrade it," he said.

"Some of this track is in very poor condition but it is an objective, it is a long-term vision here that we are looking at rather than something we're trying to achieve in the next year or so."
