ANGRY Queensland Nationals have launched a scathing counter-attack on Liberal Russell Trood after he blasted federal Nationals leader Warren Truss.

Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce accused the Liberal Senator of getting his facts wrong along with other Liberal colleagues. "There has been an emotional embellishment of what Warren Truss actually said," Senator Joyce said.

Others were more scathing, accusing Senator Trood of being hell-bent on revenge after being dumped to the number four spot on the new joint LNP senate ticket. "It is hard to win from there and he is perhaps jilted," one unnamed National said.

New tensions have erupted in the LNP with federal Liberals and Nationals trading insults in the wake of shock weekend elections results.

On Monday, Senator Trood called on Mr Truss "to show discipline" and accused the Nationals leader of trying to "unpick" the LNP merger.

Senator Joyce said comments made by Mr Truss in the wake of a strong performance by the fiercely independent West Australian Nationals had been embellished.

Mr Truss spoke favourably of the WA Nationals on Sunday but later toned down his comments, saying he wanted the Nationals and Liberals to form government. Senator Trood is fourth on the LNP joint senate ticket with Nationals Senator Joyce in the safe number two spot.

Liberal George Brandis is number one and Liberal Brett Mason is number three.
