An influential Liberal senator says he is concerned by job protection policies outlined by US presidential nominee Barack Obama. Senator Obama accepted nomination from the Democrats last week. "Those remarks in his speech about jobs in the rust-bucket states of the United States caused me concern," Liberal senator Russell Trood told Network Ten today.

Senator Trood is the deputy chair of the Senate's powerful foreign affairs, defence and trade committee. In his speech, delivered in front of more than 70,000 people, Senator Obama hinted at a move towards protecting American jobs.

"Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America," Senator Obama said.
